Our Favorites from Milan Menswear A/W 19

Menswear in Milan did not disappoint with shows from DSquared2, Emporio Armani, Fendi, Marni, MSGM, Neil Barrett, No. 21, Prada, Versace, and more. Luxury, streetwear hybrids once again took focus in almost every ready-to-wear show, but for an autumn-winter collection, there was a surprising amount of bright and nearly neon color palettes across designers. A reoccurring silhouette, oversized sweaters, and outerwear paired with perfectly tailored trousers exposing ankles and big ass shoes. Notably, most footwear resembled Doc Martins in one way or another. Big, bulky, round toes, flat toes, or the occasional creeper. It appears the giant sneaker trend has leaked into boots and dress shoes and we are here for it!

Two collections caught our eye; one eagerly anticipated and the other we can’t wait to get our hands on. Let us start with the underwhelming hype, shall we? Versace.

Versace was highly anticipated because we all wanted to see what would happen now that Donatella sold Versace to Michael Kors Holdings. It would be unfair not to disclose that we are not the biggest Versace fans in general. Yes, there are amazing pieces in the Versace archives. Yes, they innovated many iconic styles, but when it comes to wearability meh, it’s not for us — few, glad to get that off our chest. Now buckle up, and let's dive into the AW19 collection from Versace.

Red, Yellow, White, and Black, a color story we’ve seen before. Jersey, jeans, and graphics oh my! Remember those iconic styles we just talked about? The iconic belt bucks and leather harness in everyday wear that created a style revolution in the ’80s. Take all that show-stopping style and bring it down to a fast fashion, forever 21 tragic level. However, we see what Donatella was doing here. She needs the brand to make money for her new boss(s) and wants to stay hip and young with the kids, aka the new consumers of luxury fashion, but it fell so flat looking cheap as Los Angles’ Santi Alley. Two words, screen sprint. One word, no. The whole show was one bad choice after another. It was like watching someone over fifty take a selfie. Chin up, bad angle, too close, and looking for validation from a cringing youth. Time will tell to see if the collection will sell. Our guess is, unfortunately, yes, but the hope is no. Not for the failure of Versace, but for the ability to change the next collection in a positive way. That’s all. 

Now let’s get positive with Prada.  Our favorite Milan show! Step aside screen printed buckle and hello to double, triple wrap belts. No this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this, Hedi Slimane did the same belt wrap during his time at Dior Homme but they we’re ultra slim. Prada has in our opinion, taken the trend of utility belts seen in Off-White and elevated it to a look you can wear with a suit.

Yes, we live for this belt and want one as soon as they are available. Along with the belts, Prada took their signature bucket hat and made it winter ready with colorful fur. A trend we will see more of. We love a bucket hat dressed up or down and are living for its furry cousin. The show itself had fantastic music and a dark gothic futuristic simplicity that was perfectly paired with the stylings of every look. From head to toe, this ready-to-wear collection is the first we’ve seen in a while where we want everything. Bravo Miuccia Prada!
